Assignment 2A - Bug List

1. Compromising over the temperature of the apartment when you have roommates.
Why it exists: People are comfortable in different temperatures so you have to compromise when you are sharing an apartment with however many people.

2. Little to no buses run in Gainesville on non-school days.
Why it exists: Students don't need to use the buses to go to school when there isn't any, so the city has fewer of them running to save money.

3. Sidewalks on campus aren't conducive to skating or long-boarding for students who skate to class.
Why it exists: The schools\ is not concerned about such a small percentage of the population who use skate/long-boards, so the sidewalks are fine as long as they're usable to pedestrians.

4. Unsanitary bathrooms in certain buildings (CSE), while there are very clean ones in others (Heavener).
Why it exists: Some buildings are newer than others and thus have newer and cleaner bathrooms. Additionally, the departments responsible for the respective buildings each have their own budgets which contribute to how much money is spent on cleaning and maintenance.

5. Not knowing which social spot or club to go to on the weekends based on how populated or empty it might be.
Why it exists: Clubs and bars naturally compete for customers and on certain nights people choose whichever bar/club has a special they like, or whoever they know is already going there.

6. Having to do more laundry over the summer.
Why it exists: Its hotter in the summer and the more time you spend outside in the heat, the more likely you are to sweat and get your clothes dirty, which then means you have to do more laundry.

7. Having to buy new clothes every season (i.e. summer and winter clothing).
Why it exists: After wearing the clothes for a season, next time that season comes around you might feel that the color has faded or that it no longer suits your style; which means you have to purchase new clothes.

8. High monthly food expenses when you don't know how to cook.
Why it exists: Instead of buying ingredients and cooking yourself, you have to buy frozen or prepped meals, which are naturally more expensive because they factor in cooking expenses.

9. Seeing someone waste a machine at the gym by being on their phone as they are using it.
Why it exists: There are a lot of people who go to the gym simply to be there or to tell themselves that they went, but are not actually committed to working out.

10. The time that it takes to make decisions when you are in a big group.
Why it exists: You have to take into account all the opinions of the different members of the group and reconcile them with each other since people will naturally have differing desires.

11. Not knowing what to do when you have had a busy week and then unexpectedly find some free time.
Why it exists: If you plan to mostly do work and then find yourself with free time then you might feel that you should make the best use of it by being productive or finding the most fun activity possible, both of which are unrealistic given the situation.

12. Having multiple assignments due on the same day when you are taking classes over the summer since there is less time.
Why it exists: Classes do not know your schedule nor do they care, so it is up to you as the student to know in advance that you will be busy and to adequately prepare for that.

13. Running out of breakfast foods but not dinner foods.
Why it exists: You cannot perfectly plan how you will eat so naturally you might run out of breakfast foods but still have dinner foods left.

14. Not knowing the best time to post on social media (i.e. posting pictures on Instagram).
Why it exists: People have stuff to do with their lives and no one can perfectly predict when the most amount of people will see your post, thus you can only follow general data on when people will be on the app.

15. Having to physically apply to certain jobs because they don't do online postings or only post "help wanted" signs.
Why it exists: Certain employers would rather meet possible future employees in person in order to get a better sense of who you are.

16. Having to pay for a full screen replacement for your phone when it is getting repaired by Apple.
Why it exists: Apple does not do partial screen repairs because they feel its easier to simply replace the whole screen.

17. Finding a sublease for the summer if you are taking Summer C classes at UF and if you were previously living on campus.
Why it exists: UF Housing only offers Summer A and Summer B contracts separately which means you would have to move to two different locations as you are doing summer classes, which in itself is another annoyance.

18. People not turning on their headlights when its raining heavy.
Why it exists: Most people don't realize that visibility is as bad in heavy rain as it is at night so they don't think to turn on their headlights.

19. Having to fill out the FAFSA application and get physical copies of my parents' tax transcripts.
Why it exists: I can't get the electronic copies of my moms taxes for some reason so I have to request the copies from the IRS. Additionally, I also have to fill out FAFSA every year to get my scholarships and financial aid renewed.

20. Needing a guarantor or security deposit to finish signing the lease of an apartment.
Why it exists: As a young adult with no credit, apartment owners need some guarantee that the rent is going to get paid and that if you damage the apartment that there can be some way for you to pay for the damage.

Reflection: At first, the assignment seemed impossible because I never thought to list the things that annoyed me and even if I did, I wouldn't be able to come up with 20 because part of me has always been to ignore the things that bother me. I decided to ask my friends what bothered them in the hopes that their answers could spark some inspiration within me and it did just that. By listening to my friends talk about what bugs them, I realized that although we have very different things that bother us, the point of this assignment is to identify what personally bothers me, no matter how small. So I started to write down some things that bugged me on the notes app on my phone and I got eight done on the first day. I continued with a system of writing about four a day until I finished. After that, I realized that they were not completely fleshed out so I continued to get more specific with them as I wrote this blog post. I decided to leave the why it exists to be done after having finished with the listing first. This part was relatively easy to me. This assignment was useful because it made me more cognizant of the minor issues that are part of my daily life.

  1. Hi Coffy! After reading through your "bugs" the one that stood out to me was about when is the best time to post on social media. I remember when I that question/idea was first brought to my attention. There are plenty of blog posts and articles pertaining to the "best" time to post. I have even seen ones that tell you certain times to post certain pictures. For example: if it is an inspirational post you will post at X time and if it is a selfie you post at Y time.

Great work and I look forward to hearing more from you.
