- "Boca man, 70, charged with getting 13-year-old pregnant" by Larry Barszewski

- A 13-year-old girl who was taken to a hospital for constipation turned out to be pregnant, and the 70-year-old man who was taking care of her admitted to being the father of the unborn child.
- People taking sexual advantage of minors has consistently been a problem in our society. These minors are often left with lasting emotional trauma. This issue is difficult to solve because it often comes from people in positions of power who then abuse these non-consenting minors.
- In this specific case, the girl who was sexually abused clearly suffers most. She will be left with a lifelong emotional trauma that will affect other aspects of her life. Law enforcement officers have problems with this because they have to predators such as the old man in this story. Therapists can also have an issue with this because they are the ones who have to help the victims cope with their emotional trauma. Neighbors of the minors or pedophiles might also have an issue with knowing if these crimes are happening in their neighborhoods and living with the fact that they knew it was happening or that they were friends with such a person. Prosecutors can also have an issue with these situations when it comes to gathering evidence for the trial against predators so that they can make sure they pay for their crimes. Lastly, doctors, nurses and other hospital staff have to piece the situation together and medically take care of the victims.
- "Man stabs dad to death, wounds stepmom and kills himself" by Larry Barszewski
- https://www.sun-sentinel.com/local/broward/fl-ne-north-lauderdale-stabbing-victims-identified-20190528-idpheij5urbxvjimmcqzz4kpj4-story.html
- A 33-year-old man stabbed his father to death on his lawn, and when his mother tried to stop him he stabbed her too. The mom then ran into the house to call the police, at which point when the man then began to repeatedly stab himself until he bled out and died.
- Psychologically challenged people walk among us everyday with no therapeutic help and the general population never know when they're gonna snap and take it out on everyone. There also exists the possibility that he was on drugs, bringing about another problem of drug abuse and the consequences.
- Parents, siblings, spouses, and children of the psychologically challenged or drug abusing people can be subject to their violent reactions. Their coworkers who see them everyday can also unknowing to them, be their next victims. The US mental health system is basically nonexistent so major sections of the population suffer from mental health issues which are never resolved. This can lead to drug abuse, which also factors into the overarching issue.
- "Snake slithers out of toilet, bites Coral Springs man (on the arm)" by Skyler Swisher
- https://www.sun-sentinel.com/local/broward/coral-springs/fl-ne-coral-springs-snake-attack-20190528-togijbdkvvgspd2nfjptngzsh4-story.html
- A 52-year-old man was bitten by a non-venomous snake after lifting the toilet seat in his Florida home.
- People with non-traditional pets are irresponsible, allowing them to escape and enter the homes of random people. Also, it could be that the snake was part of wildlife and simply escaped.
- The man who got bitten obviously has a problem with this because if the snake was actually venomous then he would have been in serious trouble. Animal control can find an issue with situations like these because it means that people who own these pets are not properly handling them. The owners of these animals can also find it difficult that they have to take care of these animals, as well as insure that they don't go loose and cause harm to random people. There also exists the possibility that the animals might get apprehended and they have to pay a fine or something in order to get it back.
- "Florida restricts access to mass killing videos" by Skyler Swisher
- https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/politics/fl-ne-mass-killing-video-exemption-20190523-kwaaxrkfj5bclmh4nkqmmrkhg4-story.html
- Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill which created a public records exemption of an video showing the deaths of three or more people, not including the perpetrator.
- Large sections of the Florida public will no longer be able to view video evidence of mass shootings and hold the proper authorities responsible unless they can privately access the video by someone showing it to them.
- Relatives and friends of the victims of these shootings might find it difficult to trust that all of those who failed to do their job on the day of such a tragedy will be properly held responsible for their roles in letting it happen if the evidence is not made public. As mentioned in the story, defenders of the first amendment might see it as an infringement on their rights and holding those responsible accountable. Other random people who might be curious to see the video for whatever reason might also see it as the government restricting their access to information.
- "Ride share vehicles carry more germs than a toilet seat. Here's where not to touch." by Cindy Goodman
- https://www.sun-sentinel.com/health/fl-ne-rideshares-have-germs-20190515-kcwyjooh5zhdhe2vng5vtcvp4a-story.html
- Insurance company Netquote conducted a study which found that ride share vehicles such as Uber and Lyft carry 35,000 times more germs than a toilet seat, and 219 times more germs than the average taxi cab.
- Uber and Lyft are becoming increasingly popular and this is valuable information for people who frequently use their services. The story also presented the places in the cars used by those services which had the highest concentration of bacteria; while also making suggestions as to certain precautions which people could take to minimize the risks. There's currently a Hepatitis A outbreak in South Florida and the writer wants to warn people that ride sharing services can be a hotbed for that.
- People who use these ride-sharing services obviously have the biggest issue with their driver's car having so much bacteria. The drivers themselves spend the most time in these cars and thus can be most consistently exposed to the germs that passengers have brought in. Upon hearing this news, their families might become concerned that they will get sick and also put a halt to their source of income. The corporate teams, and all public traders with a stake in Uber might be concerned about the value of the company if a good portion of their drivers get sick and news of it spreads.
Hey!
ReplyDeleteEvery once in awhile I would look around an Uber and ask myself questions about the cleanliness of the vehicles. Most seemed well vacuumed and polished, but how often were they sanitized? With the cars constantly being filled with people, there is no possible way to sanitize before the next passenger. What is interesting though, is how much different is this than a taxi? Were the same concerns brought up about taxi's or was it just accepted?
Hi Coffy, the articles you chose are very interesting. There are so many crazy stories in the news today. The 13 year will now be emotionally affected for the rest of her life because the 70-year-old man assaulted her. I agree with you that many people will be affected by this case because it is not right. The article about the snake is shocking! I agree with you that people with non-traditional pets should be careful, but the snake could’ve easily come from anywhere and this can happen to anyone! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHi Coffy,
ReplyDeleteYou have a great list of articles here, varying a great deal. I found this assignment to be really informative because I'm not currently in Florida at the moment, so I've used this as a way to keep up with all the craziness. The story about the snake is one of my biggest (and what I thought to be irrational) fears! You're right that people with unusual pets should be a little more cautious than those who own cats or dogs, because in my opinion, they're a little bit more unpredictable. The ride-sharing article was interesting and something I've never considered, but it makes sense, since more cars have several passengers every day.
Thanks for keeping me informed!
